Original Red Hibiscus Oil Painting, Floral Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" SOLD

One of the joys  of living in Florida are the almost year round flowers in our landscapes.  Hibiscus is one of the most used here, and with good reason.  They are easy to grow, beautiful and available in many colors and one of the first to bloom in the spring and late in the winter season.

This one is a study in reds.  Elio Camacho states that red is the most difficult color to paint.  When you can paint a "red" painting, you have arrived (in the art world).

This does not qualify as a "red" painting in my mind.  A "red" study usually has several red objects, each with it's own shades of red.

Still, this is good practice.

Elio likes to present his more advanced students with set ups that are all yellow, or blue, or green etc.  It is only the bravest who attempt the dreaded "all red" set up.

Beautiful flowers of North Carolina

Last month we were enjoying our condo in North Carolina, trying to get it ready for visits from family and friends.  It is so beautiful here during at least three of the four seasons.  I have not been here in winter and cannot speak to that, although I imagine the snow covered mountains would be a sight to behold.

On this trip, there are flowers blooming everywhere.  Each morning, I set out for a walk, with my trusty camera in hand.  Come along with me.......

A garden of hosta
Calla Lily
Rose abound!
Begonia
A cute little playhouse, or maybe a gardening shed?
Sit for a moment and enjoy the scenery.
Mountains surround the area,
Who knew day lilies grown wild?
I love purple flowers.  Do you know their name?

My goal is to interpret many of these scenes in oil in the coming months

White Rose Painting, 8x10x1.5" Flower Still Life, Flower Painting, Floral Painting, SOLD

Birthday Flowers!!

SOLD
Way back in December, my son and his wife sent me some beautiful flowers for my birthday.  The first thing I did was photograph them.  Then I forgot about the photos!

I finally found them last week, and decided to try my hand at one.  I am very intimidated  by flowers.  They seem so complex and I rarely meet that sweet spot between too little or too much detail.  I am not so sure about this one, but I do like the colors.

Try, try and try again!

Thistle Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, SOLD

This small oil painting is a tribute to thistles. The lowly thistle, thought to be a weed, in my eyes, a brilliant floral beauty.

SOLD

I photographed this thistle while taking a summer walk in the valley. Armed with my image, I painted it in oil, with lots of texture to suggest the spikey flower. Some of the texture comes from my use of the palette knife, and some of it was applied direct to the canvas. The sides of the canvas are finished, allowing it to be hung with or without a frame.

This is a picture of me, doing my favorite thing!

Coral Rose Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" Impressionist art

I recently took a 3 day workshop from my favorite instructor, Elio Comacho, where we painted fresh flowers every day.

Since I usually paint from the computer monitor, it is always a challenge to paint from life.  I do enjoy it, but, I know myself well enough to know that I need the advantage of having an image available whenever I want it.

When I paint flowers on my monitor, I tend to get tighter.  That does bother me.

Both of these were painted using my monitor.  I am not unhappy, but I hope to see improvement down the road.

Hope you have a rosy day!

Flower Painting | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | White Bird by Carol Schiff | 8x10x1.5" Original Oil

With this flower painting, I wanted to celebrate the beautiful, but not so well recognized, White Bird of Paradise.  If you live in the sub-tropical areas of the world, you probably see orange Bird of Paradise every day, but the white variety is not as plentiful.

The interesting thing is that although the flowers are similar excluding color, the plant and leaves are quite different.

This variety grows on a much taller plant.  I have one over 12 feet tall.  The orange plant is lower to the ground and more bush like.

No frame necessary!
